How to make
App Store screenshots.

A publish-ready App Store screenshot set is five steps: design at the two required sizes, capture clean frames, add a device bezel and caption, export a flattened PNG, and upload in order. Here is exactly how — plus the format mistakes that get uploads rejected.

The 5 steps

Twenty minutes end to end once your artwork is ready. Each step maps to a real App Store Connect requirement.

1

Design at the two required sizes

As of 2025 you only need two base sizes: the iPhone 6.9" at 1320×2868 and the iPad 13" at 2064×2752 (portrait). App Store Connect scales those down to every smaller listing, so start there. The full per-device table lives on App Store screenshot sizes.

2

Capture your app frames

Pull clean shots from the iOS Simulator (Cmd+S saves at native resolution) or a real device, or build mockups in Figma. Set a full status bar, hide personal data, and pick the screens that show your app's core value first.

3

Add device frames and captions

Drop each frame into a device bezel and add a short benefit caption above it. Frames aren't required, but framed, captioned screenshots consistently outconvert raw captures — most impressions happen in a small search carousel where a headline does the selling.

4

Export a flattened PNG

Export PNG or JPEG in RGB (sRGB or Display P3), flattened with no alpha channel, at the exact pixel dimensions. Transparency, HEIC, and off-size exports are the top three reasons App Store Connect rejects a screenshot.

5

Upload to App Store Connect

In App Store Connect, add up to 10 screenshots per display size in the order you want them shown, starting with the 6.9" iPhone set. Reorder by dragging — the first two or three carry the click, so lead with your strongest frame.

Format rules Apple enforces

Get any of these wrong and the upload bounces before it reaches review.

File type

PNG or JPEG. No HEIC, no PDF.

Color

RGB, sRGB or Display P3. Flattened — no alpha / transparency.

Dimensions

Exact pixels: iPhone 1320×2868, iPad 2064×2752.

Skip steps 1–4 entirely

ShipShots takes one config and renders the pixel-exact matrix — 6.9", 6.7", 6.5", 13" and 12.9" — flattened and ready to upload, 100% in your browser. See the exact targets on App Store screenshot sizes, then open the generator.

FAQ

How many screenshots can you upload?

Up to 10 per display size. The first two or three matter most — they appear in the search carousel before anyone taps through to your product page.

What sizes do you need in 2026?

Just two base sizes: iPhone 6.9" at 1320×2868 px and iPad 13" at 2064×2752 px (portrait). App Store Connect scales them down to smaller devices automatically. Full table on App Store screenshot sizes.

Do screenshots need a device frame?

No — a frame is optional and Apple accepts raw full-bleed captures. But framed screenshots with a short caption tend to convert better, so most published apps use them.

Why does App Store Connect reject my upload?

Almost always the wrong pixel dimensions, an alpha channel/transparency (screenshots must be flattened), an unsupported type like HEIC, or a non-RGB color profile. Export a flattened PNG at the exact size to clear all four.

Can you put marketing text on screenshots?

Yes, and it's encouraged. Keep any headline large and legible at thumbnail size, since most impressions happen in a small carousel.
